With an increasing number of states legalizing recreational and medicinal marijuana, many employers are questioning the necessity for drug screening in the workplace.

Marijuana use is still illegal from a federal perspective, and even if it becomes legal in the future, there are some valid reasons for continuing a drug-screening program. According to a poll by the Society of Human Resource Management, 16% of organizations saw a decrease in turnover rates after implementing a drug-screening program; 19% of them experienced an increase in productivity after the initiation of such a program.
The case for drug testing in the workplace:
- Substance abusers typically have lower work performance, higher absences and higher filings of workers compensation, according to many statistics.
- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports 64% of workplace accidents can be linked to substance abuse.
- The U.S. Department of Health reports a whopping 70% of drug users are employed and 9.4% of Americans 12 and older use illegal drugs.
